“I wish I could give them more than 5 ⭐️ I cannot say enough good things about this company. Lawton and Tiffany are the best! While their specialty is working and doing custom builds on Jeeps, they sure do know there way around other vehicles as well. I brought in my 2010 Subaru for a once over, they were very up front with what I needed and didn’t try to just make a quick buck off me. They are very thorough. They always kept me updated on the process of my repairs and answered any question I had. I will bring any vehicle I have in the future to them. In a world where companies try to rip people off, it’s a breath of fresh air to find a family owned business where they test you like family! THANKS AGAIN LAWTON AND TIFFANY!”

“About a month ago, my new to me Wrangler JLU developed a true death wobble. I called multiple shops, and was feeling defeated, then reached out to Superior. With Lawton and the team at Superior Auto & Offroad. They diagnosed my Jeep's death wobble the right way instead of just throwing parts at it. Lawton took the time to test drive it, explain exactly what was wrong, and only recommended what actually needed to be fixed. Fair pricing, honest advice, and excellent workmanship. My Wrangler has since completed a 4-day road trip and multiple trails without a single issue. They've earned my business for the long haul. Highly recommend.”

“The entire crew at Superior Offroad was incredible to work with. Their professionalism, communication, and commitment to surpassing their customer’s expectations is second to none. I met with multiple shops during the research phase of my upgrades, and none went above and beyond to help me find exactly what I wanted for my Jeep like Lawton and Tiff did. The work was thorough, on time, and very fairly and competitively priced. This shop is 100% worth the hour+ drive I make from south Tampa, and I would highly recommend Superior Offroad to anyone thinking of upgrades or service to their vehicle.”

“It’s in the name. Superior knowledge on how to build your Jeep to real off-roading capabilities. They’ll do mall crawlers and pavement princesses too but there’s plenty of other shops out there that that’s all they’re good for. Well, not really, you’ll end up having to go to Superior to fix their mistakes. Lol. Also, great at diagnosing engine issues and all things suspension/steering. The best in the Tampa/central Florida area bar none. Don’t waste your time or $ anywhere else.”

“I can’t say enough great things about Superior Off-Road! They took my Jeep to the next level by installing a lift and adding some beastly 42-inch tires. Not only does it look absolutely amazing, but the ride is smoother and more capable than ever. They also went above and beyond with their service and made sure everything was perfect. If you’re looking to upgrade your off-road vehicle, these are the folks to trust. Thanks again, Superior Off-Road!”

Services

Diagnostics & driveline services

Check engine light diagnostics

We read trouble codes and freeze frame data, watch live sensor readings and run targeted tests to confirm the cause before replacing parts. That covers misfires, fuel and emissions faults, and sensor and wiring problems on cars, trucks, SUVs and vans, domestic and import.

Drivetrain repair & service

Fluid service, diagnosis and repair for automatic and manual transmissions, clutches and transfer cases. We check for slipping, harsh or delayed shifts, leaks and noises, and recommend service intervals that fit how you drive, including towing, hauling and stop-and-go traffic.

Axle & differential repair

We diagnose whining, howling and clunking from axles and differentials, and handle seals, bearings, fluid service, gear sets and lockers. After a move to larger tires, re-gearing helps bring back acceleration and drivability on trucks, Jeeps and other 4x4s.

Complex mechanical repair

Intermittent stalling, hard starts, odd noises and faults that come and go take patience. We gather details about when the problem appears, try to reproduce it and test methodically until we find the cause, then explain the repair options before any work begins.

Warning signs

Signs of engine or drivetrain trouble

  • Check engine light on or flashing
  • Rough idle, misfires or loss of power
  • Slipping, harsh or delayed shifting
  • Whining or howling from the axles
  • Clunks when shifting between drive and reverse
  • Fluid leaks around the transmission or differentials

If you notice any of these, call the shop or book an inspection.

4x4 expertise

Lasting fixes

Repairs aimed at a permanent fix, not a temporary patch.

How we track down engine and drivetrain problems

A check engine light stores a trouble code, but the code points to a system, not always to the failed part. A lean code, for example, could come from a vacuum leak, a weak fuel pump, a dirty sensor or an exhaust leak ahead of an oxygen sensor. We read the codes and freeze frame data, watch live sensor readings and run the tests that confirm the cause before replacing anything.

For drivetrain complaints we listen as carefully as we test. When a noise happens, at what speed, and whether it changes on acceleration, coasting or turning all help separate a wheel bearing from a differential or transmission problem. We check fluid level and condition, look for leaks and road test the vehicle. Then we explain what we found and your options before any work begins.

Heat, traffic and towing in Central Florida

Florida heat is hard on fluids. Transmission fluid breaks down faster at high temperatures, and stop-and-go traffic on I-4 or a summer afternoon pulling a boat trailer adds even more heat. Many owner’s manuals list a severe-service schedule for towing, heavy traffic and hot climates. If that describes your driving, following the shorter intervals for transmission, transfer case and differential fluid can help those parts last.

Water is another threat. Driving through deep standing water after a storm or crossing flooded trails can pull water in through axle and differential vents. Water in gear oil turns it milky and leads to rust and bearing wear. If you’ve driven through water deeper than your wheel hubs, have the fluids checked. Water drawn into the engine through the air intake can cause serious damage, so avoid deep water entirely.

Urgent problems versus ones that can wait

Some symptoms mean you should stop driving and call. A flashing check engine light, an oil pressure warning, a temperature gauge climbing toward hot, a grinding noise from the driveline or a transmission that suddenly won’t go into gear can all lead to bigger damage if you keep going. In those cases, getting the vehicle to the shop safely is better than pushing through one more trip.

Other issues give you time to plan. A steady check engine light with the vehicle running normally, a small seep at a differential cover or a slightly firm shift can often be scheduled. Have it inspected soon so you know what you’re dealing with. We’ll tell you honestly what needs attention now and what can wait, so you can plan and budget for the repair.

FAQ

Engine & drivetrain FAQs

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

A steady light usually means get it checked soon. A flashing light can mean a serious misfire, so reduce driving and call the shop.

Can you re-gear my axles after a tire upgrade?

Yes. Re-gearing restores performance and drivability after moving to larger tires.

Do you work on transfer cases?

Yes, including service, diagnosis and repair on 4x4 vehicles.

Will the check engine light go off after the repair?

Usually it goes off once the fault is fixed and the codes are cleared, though some self-tests need a few drive cycles to confirm the repair. If the light comes back, it can mean a second fault or a related problem. We explain what the code meant and what we repaired so you know what to watch for.

How often should I change transmission and differential fluid?

It depends on your vehicle and how you drive. Your owner’s manual lists the intervals, and many include a shorter schedule for towing, heavy loads and hot climates. Some transmissions are described as having lifetime fluid, but heat and hard use still take a toll on it. We can check your fluid and give you a recommendation.

What causes a clunk when I shift into drive or reverse?

Common causes include worn engine or transmission mounts, worn U-joints or other play in the driveline, and excess backlash in the differential. Low transmission fluid or a high idle can also make engagement harsher. We inspect the mounts and driveline and road test the vehicle to pinpoint the source.
